Description:
Gold struck medal with obverse showing lifeboat with standing crewmember and one in water with draped female, lighthouse at right, sinking ship at left; reverse legend: "BY RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS FEBRAURY 24. 1873" above banded oak wreath enclosing "TO" and in space for engraving: "J.CONNOLLY." above "FOR/ COURAGE AND HUMANITY/ IN THE/ SAVING OF LIFE/ FROM THE WRECK/ OF THE/ STEAMER METIS/ ON/ LONG ISLAND SOUND/ AUGUST 31, 1872."
