The subject was the son of Colonel Melancthon Lloyd Woolsey, an officer in the Continental Army, and Alida (Livingston) Woolsey. He joined the navy as a midshipman in 1800, and proved himself a hero in the Battle of Sackett's Harbor, July 1812. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his great-grandson.
