Brass struck medal with obverse showing figures at left and right (allegories of John Bull and Uncle Sam) with lightning passing between their hands over ocean and ship; legend at left: "HOW ARE YOU JONATHAN"; at right: "PURTY WELL OLD FELLER/ HEOW'S YERSELF". Reverse legend inside rope border: "ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH / SUCCESSFULLY / LAID / 5TH OF / AUGUST / 1858."
