Silver struck medal with obverse showing right-facing bust-length portrait of Decatur in uniform; legend: "COM. S. DECATUR OF THE U.S. NAVY 1813." Reverse shows right-facing bust-length portrait of Lawrence in uniform; legend: "CAP. J. LAWRENCE OF THE U.S. NAVY 1813"
Gallery Label: 
This is a rare strike in silver of a medal commemorating two heroes of the War of 1812 who had become national celebrities. Lawrence was killed in teh battle between the HMS Shannon and the USS Chesapeake, which he commanded. Decatur was killed in a duel in 1820.
