Bronze struck medal with obverse showing the uniformed bust of Zachary Taylor facing right, with legend: "MAJOR GENERAL ZACHARY TAYLOR." Reverse with wreath of oak surrounding inscription: "RESOLUTION/OF/CONGRESS/MARCH 2ND 1847/MONTERREY/SEPTEMBER 1846."

The reverse of this medal showing a wreath of oak is a second version of it ordered by Director of the Mint Robert M. Patterson because the wreath used earlier closely resembled that on the Polk inaugural medal of 1845.
