New-York Historical is temporarily closed to help contain the spread of COVID-19. On August 14, we're opening Hope Wanted: New York City Under Quarantine, a free, outdoor exhibition in our rear courtyard. See more details on our Visit page.
inscribed: on cardboard backing: "Carl & Fredrika Weidner/N.Y. 1900. No. 333/Miss Lydia Peabody Loring"
signed: on left: "C. and F. Weidner"
The name Peabody in the cardboard inscription implies that the subject was related to that family, either through her mother in Baltimore or her father in Boston. In both cities the name was a prominent one and it may well have been part of her full name.
