Description:
Copper-plated lead electrotype of bronze medal struck in 1781 in Paris, obverse shows Howard on horseback pursuing an enemy with winged Victory holding laurel wreath over his head; with legend: "JOH.EDGAR.HOWARD.LEGIONIS PEDITUM PRAEFECTO" and insctiption below exergual line: "COMITIA AMERICANA." Reverse bears an inscription surrounded by laurel wreath: "QUOD/IN NUTANTEM HOSTIUM ACTEM/SUBITO IRRUENS/PREACLARUM BELLICAE VIRTUTIS/SPECIMEN DEDIT/IN PUGNA AD COWPENS/XVII JAN MDCCLXXXI."
