A native of Philadelphia, this well-known actor made his stage debut in Washington at the age of four. In 1856 he appeared on the New York stage a seasoned and accomplished actor with the company of Laura Keene and thereafter his success was assured. In London one of his greatest triumphs was in the title role of Boucicault's "Rip Van Winkle" in 1865. He brought it to New York's Olympic Theatre the following year with equal success. In this portrait, he is depicted in that role.
