Jedidiah Morse, a Congregational minister and "the father of American geography," was born in Woodstock, Connecticut. He was one of the founders of the Andover Theological Seminary and of the American Bible Society and the New England Tract Society. His special interest was geography, and he was the author of the first book on the subject to be published in America--"Geography Made Easy" (1784). Jedidiah Morse was the father of Samuel F. B. Morse, who became famous as a painter and inventor.
