Bronze struck medal with obverse showing clothed bust of Isaac Pitman facing left, surrounded by legend within line border: "ISAAC PITMAN INVENTOR OF PHONOGRAPHY/1837-1887." Reverse contains inscription at center enclosed by laurel wreath: "FROM/THE AMERICAN FRIENDS/OF/ISAAC PITMAN/TO COMMEMORATE HIS/FIFTY YEARS OF WORK/TO IMPROVE THE/STENOGRAPHIC ART."
