Description:
Wooden frame formed of four separate pieces, bottom front carved "GJOA", surrounding image of sailing ship at sea within arched columns; legend: "NORTHWEST PASSAGE/ 1902-1906/ GJOA Capt. Roald Amundsen/ NILS HAGERUP, Artist". Paper matte on back inscribed in ink: "To:/ S. Van B. Nicol Esq./ Photograph of Capt. Amundsen's/ vessel GJOA, built 1872 at/ Norway. With this vessel/ the N.W. Passage was made/ in the expedition of 1903-1907/ This frame is from Amundsen's/ bookshelf on the Gjoa. I got it/ off the vessel myself. Picture is/ in Shipping Exchange, San Francisco/ G. Collinson." On wooden frame in pencil: "Oct 30 1947". Loop hanger inserted at top.
