Description: 
Hat with tapered cylindrical dark blue wool felt crown with soft sides and rigid, circular top; black patent leather visor with curved profile and rounded edge; black patent leather chinstrap secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle; brown leather sweatband and brown textile lining.
Gallery Label: 
According to the accesssion records, hats of this type were worn by General William T. Sherman's soldiers on their march through Georgia in 1864. The Confederates referred to the soldiers as "Sherman's Bummers," hence this hat is described as a "Sherman's Bummer Cap."
