Description:
Hat (dress/undress?) with soft, cylindrical, dark blue wool felt crown with rigid, circular top with interlace pattern of gold braid; black leather visor which is rigid and somewhat rectangular; single strips of gold braid applied vertically on either side and on back of crown, and two parallel strips running horizontally around base; gilded metal New York State insignia pinned to front; chin strap made of gold metallic cloth tape secured at either side by a button embossed with shield-breasted eagle; red leather sweatband and pink silk lining with drawstring.

The donor believed this hat to be post-Civil War, and possibly once owned by Stephen Van Rensselaer IV.
