A portrait of General Hanson Edward Ely (1867-1958) wearing his uniform, which is clad with a myriad of distinguished military medals. The partially bald subject is seated against a non-descript background and is facing right with his left hand thumb in his belt. Signed in the lower right hand corner: DeWitt M. Lockman
At the time of his retirement Ely had attained the rank of major general in the U.S. army. He served in the Philippines in 1899-1901, again in 1907-1912, and was commander of the Fifth Division of the Third Army Corps, American Expeditionary Force, in Europe in 1918. His portrait is one of the group of American portraits given to the Society by the artist.
