Bronze struck medal with uniformed bust of Isaac Shelby facing right and legend: "GOVERNOR ISAAC SHELBY." Reverse shows America crowning captured British and Indian arms with a wreath; legend: "RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS APRIL 4. 1818"; inscription in exergue: "BATTLE OF THE THAMES/OCTOBER 5. 1818."

This medal is referred to as "muling" or "hybrid" because it was made with two dies that originally were not intended to be used together. This "hybridization" of dies was practiced by the U.S. Mint in the period from 1880 to 1890.
