Overall: 35 1/4 x 21 1/2 x 18 1/2 in. ( 89.5 x 54.6 x 47 cm )
inscribed: back of bust: "C 1876/ WILSON MACDONALD. BUST OF/ WASHINGTON/COPIED FROM THE ORIGINAL/HOUDON CAST 1785./AND STUART'S PORTRAIT R6 1975 W. M."
MacDonald maintained his studio in New York and specialized in sculpted portrait busts. His portrait of Washington was based on a bust of Jean Antoine Houdon and a painting by Gilbert Stuart, probably the two most popular images of the first president. MacDonald is known to have owned a copy of the cast that Clark Mills made of the original 1785 bust by Houdon (now at Mount Vernon).
