Called "The Marquis," the subject of this portrait was the son of Abraham De Peyster, Jr., and Margareta (Van Cortlandt) De Peyster. He was appointed treasurer of the province of New York in 1767, a post that his father and grandfather had held before him. This portrait was painted while the subject was living in France, and is a fine example of the French rococo style of the time of Louis XV.
