The subject, a native of Higham, Mass., began his career in 1855 as assistant librarian at the Astor Library, and after many years as a librarian in various libraries in New York, he entered journalism. In addition to writing for newspapers, Norton wrote biographies and plays. Several of his plays were produced in New York theaters, and 1700 of his biographical essays appeared in the "National Cyclopaedia of American Biography."
