Description: 
A commemorative three handled 'loving cup' or 'friendship cup', with gold handles and a dark purple pedestal foot. One side is printed in gold "50th Anniversary/ Kane Council No. 2 R. & S.M./ 1860/ Celebrated Feb. 3, 1911/ In Honor Of/ Dr. E. K. Kane/ Newark, New Jersey". On another side is a photolithographic portrait marked "Elisha Kent Kane, M.D., U.S.N./ Born Feb. 3rd, 1820/ Died Feb. 16th, 1857". One the third side is a gold symbol that resembles two stylized letter "M"'s in a triangle surrounded by radiating rays.

Elisha Kent Kane was born 3 February 1820 in Philadelphia to John Kintzing Kane, Attorney General, State of Pennsylvania (1845-1846), later Judge of U.S. District Court of Eastern Pennsylvania. Kane attended the University of Virginia, (1837-1839), then enrolled as a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1842. His principal Naval expeditions were the first Grinnell Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, (1851-52), and the Second Grinnell Expedition, (1853-55).
