Bronze struck medal with obverse showing clothed half-length three-quarter right bust of Peter Cooper surrounded by legend: "THE COOPER UNION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART FOUNDED A D 1859 BY PETER COOPER A MECHANIC OF NEW YORK"; inscription of left and right of image: "BORN/1791//DIED/1883." Reverse shows the Cooper Union building on Astor Place, fronted with allegorical female figure of Knowledge reading; legend: "TO HONOR PETER COOPER WHOSE LIFE WAS DEVOTED TO THE PUBLIC WELFARE AND EDUCATION OF ALL"; inscription at left of field: "FIRST HALF-CENTURY OF THE/COOPER UNION/1859-1909/SARAH AMELIA HEWITT/WITH LOVE AND REVERENCE/FOR HER FATHER/THE FOUNDER"; inscription in exergue: "IN LABORE QVIES."
