Among the most iconic statutes in New York City are the beloved pair of lions in front of the main branch of the New York Public Library. They were named Patience and Fortitude by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia. Vancouver yacht maker and cane carver Ivan Wilson was asked to create a cane that commemorated the lions. The cane handle was originally meant to have two lions, but Wilson instead opted for one lion, with one name on either side of the handle.
