Cane collector Lou Grumet acquired a number of antique canes related to iconic American leaders, and then broadened his collection by commissioning Vancouver yacht maker and cane carver Ivan Wilson to create a cane commemorating the trip of the first barge to leave Buffalo traveling down the Erie Canal headed to New York City. The handle of the cane is designed to represent the first barrel of water loaded on the barge in Buffalo. The actual barrel is in the collection of the New-York Historical Society. The edge of the cane's barrel is fitted with a stamp from the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Canal.
