Grand Army of the Republic.
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a group of Union veterans of the Civil War, held annual encampments from 1866 to 1949 to celebrate their days of glory. Barbara Grumet, wife of cane collector Lou Grumet, had a special interest in the GAR, as her great-grandfather was the GAR national chair. Commemorative canes were produced for many of the encampments. This example consists of a wood stick topped with an ivory head and applied gold decoration.
