Colonel Thomas Dongan (1719-ca. 1765)
Oil on canvas
Overall: 45 3/4 x 34 1/2 in. ( 116.2 x 87.6 cm )
This portrait and its companion came from the Manor of Castletown, Staten Island, which was built by Governor Thomas Dongan (1634-1715). These pictures may be copies after unlocated 18th-century French originals. (The game bird held by the subject in this portrait has been identified as a red-legged partridge, or Alectoris rufa, a native of south European ranges, specifically the Pyrenees.)
