Description:
Flat-folding black beaver (silk) chapeau with two wide bands of black ribbon extending diagonally from lower edge of front, framing capsule-shaped cockade with pleated black ribbon border and New York State shield embroidered at center; gold bullion fringe at corners; black ostrich feathers lining crest; shaped orange cardboard box.
Gallery Label:
According to the accession records, this chapeau was worn by Lt.-Colonel George Stevens Schermerhorn (1835-1926) of the 7th Regiment, National Guard New York. Various other parts of Schermerhorn's uniform are also in the N-YHS Collection.
