Brass chamberstick with large saucer base and cylindrical shaft.
According to accession records, this candlestick was brought from Scotland in 1802 by Agnes Hall, who married David Smith. They ran an inn at East Chester that Lafayette visited in 1824 on his way to Boston, when he used this candlestick. The candlestick was passed down to Sarah Jane Smith (Mrs. Robinson Boyce), then to Nicholas Hall Boyce, and finally to Mary Boyce (Mrs. Mary Boyce Spell), the donor.
