Gallery Label:
The subject, an engraver and publisher, was born at Beekman, New York, and had moved to New York City by 1838. He became famous as a publisher of history books, such "Lives of the Signers of the Declaration of American Independence" (1848) and the "Pictorial Field Book of the Revolution" (1850-52), which were illustrated with numerous engravings, sometimes by Lossing himself. His portrait was purchased by the Society from his granddaughter.
