inscriptions: on front: "Franklin"
inscribed: on back: "Sevres"
A posthumous echo of Franklin's popularity, this porcelain bust was modeled after Caffiéri's famous portrait, but with several variations: a slight upward tilt and rotation of the head, and the addition of costume details such as coat buttons. A popular and relatively inexpensive form of portraiture, busts such as this were readily available for sale to Franklin's French fans and admirers.
