In 1976, Bella Abzug, after many years in the U.S. House of Representatives, ran for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. She was defeated by Daniel Patrick Moynihan in a contest which also included Ramsey Clark, Paul O'Dwyer, and Abraham Hirschfeld.
