Base drum with painted wooden cylinder with seam reinforced with metal studs, and drumheads made of animal hide; red painted wooden rims pierced with holes for rope lacing, which is reinforced with leather bands; painted panel with soaring eagle and decorative motifs covers about one third of cylinder, with remainder painted yellow.
According to the donor, the Briggs family, former owners of this drum, believed that it had been used at the Battle of Saratoga, during the Revolutionary War.
