Inscribed at lower center in brown ink: "Barred Owl. Male adult. / Strix nebulosa. -- / Grey Squirel. / Scurius cinereus. --"
Male. Havell plate no. 46 includes an Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) inserted at lower right on branch.
The squirrel was added by the engraver. The original drawing of the squirrel is owned by Mrs. Ernest Tyler, NYC. (see figure 19, The Birds of America)
