Pink silk hand stitched and quilted baby bonnet with pink glazed cotton lining; the body of the bonnet quilted in a diamond pattern and the horseshoe shaped inset panel at the center back quilted with cross-over loop design surrounding a star motif; the brim is cord-quilted and attached by running stitches to a cream silk brocade ribbon turned-back displaying a meandering ivy design; the hem of the body of the bonnet is finished in a brown tape applied by running stitches; a self-fabric shirred collar is attached to the outside of bonnet along tape around the neck edge and is quilted in a cross-over loop design; the collar is trimmed and lined with the brocade ribbon as is also used in the brim.
Handmade bonnet covers were often used by women and children in the 19th century over their best bonnets to provide a fashionable protection against wind, snow or rain.
