The subject was the son of John and Mary Ann (Geib) Wallis. His father was a New York lawyer who lived on Liberty Street. He married his first cousin Elizabeth Geib and entered his father's law office. In 1846 he moved to Jersey City, practiced law, and became an alderman and president of the First National Bank. He was appointed collector of internal revenue by two presidents, Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant.
